Advice column writer of Dear Abby, a column which set out to solve newspaper readers' personal problems. She later hosted a Dear Abby radio program for over 10 years.

She graduated from Morningside College with her twin sister.

Her legacy and column are now carried on by her daughter, Jeanne Phillips. She wrote six published books throughout her career.

She married Morton Phillips and together they had a daughter named Jeanne and a son named Edward.

She took her last name from President Martin Van Buren .
