ABOUT AFEWERK TEKLE

Proponent of Ethiopian art and culture who became First Laureate of the Haile Selassie I Prize for Fine Arts.

He was part of the youthful, post-World War II generation determined to rebuild Ethiopia following the Italian occupation.

His work was quickly embraced by his people and his government, and he was commissioned to paint murals and mosaics in St. George's Cathedral and to create sculptures of famed Ethiopians.

He was born to Feleketch Yamatawork and Tekle Mano in Ankober, Ethiopia.

He was a student of painting, sculpture, and architecture at the Slade School of Art, where Augustus John also studied.
