A professional rugby union player from South Africa, representing the English Premiership team Sale Sharks. He primarily plays as a hooker in his rugby career.

He played rugby at Outeniqua High School.

He was born in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa and grew up in George. He is the elder sibling of Duhan van der Merwe , a Scotland international and British and Irish Lions winger. His wife's name is Angie.

He plays for the Sale Sharks alongside Charlie Hodgson .
