ABOUT ALEKSANDRS CAKS

A twentieth-century Latvian poet and writer of urban-themed works, he is best known for titles such as Raksti and the two-volume Izlase. His debut poetry collection, Sesi, is a series of reflections on life in Riga, Latvia.

He published his first book of poetry in 1928. The work was unique in its time for its focus on themes such as homelessness, prostitution, and night life.

He was accused by the Soviet Union's Communist government of writing politically subversive works.

He was the son of a Riga tailor. After his death, Caks had a Latvian museum and street named in his honor.

He and Romain Gary were fellow Latvian writers.
