ABOUT ALFRED GERRARD

British modernist artist whose best known sculptures include 1955's Stages in the Development of Man and 1960's The Dance.

He grew up in Hartford, Cheshire with four siblings and served in World War I during his early adulthood years.

He taught at the Slade School of Fine Art for many years and also headed the school's Sculpture Department.

His three marriages --- to Katherine Leigh-Pemberton, Nancy Sinclair, and Karen Sinclair -- produced no children.

His 1920s sculpture, North Wind, was commissioned by architect Charles Holden to adorn the London Underground Electric Railways Company headquarters.
