He originally played infield positions before becoming a Gold Glove-winning center fielder.
He made the All-Star team in his first four years as a member of the Kansas City Royals.
He married his wife in the late 1960s, and had several children with her.
He played alongside Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett on the Royals from 1973 to 1983.
