Famous as the founder of Malaysia's Usaha Tegas investment holding company, he had a net worth of close to twelve billion dollars in the year 2011.
After earning his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Melbourne, he obtained his MBA from Harvard University.
In the 1990s, he purchased close to half of Malaysia's Maxis Communications mobile phone company.
A practitioner of Hinduism and the child of Sri Lankan Tamil parents, he grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He later raised three children of his own.
He and Singapore Airlines C.E.O. Cheong Kong are both prominent Malaysian-born business executives.
