Prolific ballet dancer, most recognized for his role as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet.

After his mother decided he had a gift for dance, she sent him to France to receive proper training with Maria Nevelskaya (of the Bolshoi Ballet).

He had a part in Charlie Chaplin 's film Limelight in 1952.

He was born in Russia.

He and Darcey Bussell are among the world's most renowned ballet dancers.
