British Ambassador to Syria (1991-1994) and Middle East Director of the United Kingdom's Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Later in his career, he became an Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
After studying economics and science at Magdalene College, Cambridge, he served with the British Army Infantry's Royal Green Jackets.
In 2001, he established and led a right-wing British immigration control group called MigrationWatch UK.
During his adolescent years, he resided in Hertford, England, where he attended a prestigious boarding school called the Haileybury and Imperial Service College.
He and Matthew Rycroft (one-time British Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina) both held important English diplomatic positions.
