ABOUT ART BLAKEY

Grammy Award-winning hard bop drummer who performed with the Jazz Messengers. He was a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner in 2005.

He taught himself the drums after learning how to play the piano.

He was a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

He grew up with foster parents who were devout Seventh Day Adventists.

Blakey and Dave Brubeck were both accomplished jazz musicians.
