ABOUT ARTHUR LOWE
British actor who most notably played Captain George Mainwaring on the popular sitcom Dad's Army, but was also on Coronation Street .
He was active in the British theater scene in the years leading up to the outbreak of World War II. Later, he rose to on-screen fame through playing Leonard Swindley on the hit series Coronation Street.
He was a seven-time BAFTA Award nominee during his thirty-year acting career.
He met his wife, Joan Cooper, in 1945, while they were both performing with the Manchester Repertory Theatre. He and Cooper married in 1948 and had a son, Stephen, who was born in 1953.
He appeared alongside Vincent Price in the 1973 horror film Theatre of Blood.
