ABOUT AUDREY SMITH

Cryobiologist credited with being the first scientist to use glycerol to protect red blood cells during the freezing process. Her work also contributed heavily to advancements in animal breeding and husbandry.

She graduated from King's College, London and the Bedford College for Women, where she received first class honors.

She won the Kamerlingh Onnes Medal for her achievements in the field of refrigeration technology in 1973.

Her father, Alan, worked for the Indian Civil Service.

She and biologist Peter Medawar both worked at the National Institute for Medical Research in London.
