ABOUT AUGUSTA LADYGREGORY

Remembered for her association with the Irish Literary Revival, this late 19th and early 20th-century playwright, director, and theater producer is perhaps most famous as a founder of both the Abbey Theatre and the Irish Literary Theatre.

Her earliest literary works include A Woman's Sonnets (poems) and Arabi and His Household (a political pamphlet).

She was fascinated by Irish mythology and folklore, and she published numerous collections of traditional Irish stories.

She grew up in County Galway, Ireland, and later married Sir William Henry Gregory. Her son, Robert Gregory, was killed in combat in World War I.

Her son's untimely death inspired several William Butler Yeats poems, including "In Memory of Major Robert Gregory" and "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death."
