Avetik Isahakyan
ABOUT AVETIK ISAHAKYAN
Armenian poet, activist, and writer known for his articles on the Armenian Genocide and for his superb lyric poetry. His best-known works include The Songs of Haiduks, To my Motherland, Abu-Lala Mahari, and Our historians and Our Minstrels.
He studied at the Kevorkian Seminary and the University of Leipzig and was imprisoned twice -- in 1896 and 1908 -- for his political activities.
His face can be found on the 10,000 dram bill in Armenia.
He was born in Alexandropol, Erivan Governorate, in what was then the Russian Empire.
He was lauded by Russian poet Alexander Blok .
