His grandfather, Robert Mitchum , was an actor who got him involved in the industry.

He started a band while in college at USC called The Velvet Box.

He married Noelle Balfour and they welcomed a daughter named Allexanne. After their divorce he married Jaime Anstead and they had a daughter named Carrington. He and Jaime divorced in 2014.

Ashley Judd starred in his award-winning film, Ruby in Paradise.
