Scottish golf legend who went from an impoverished childhood to mingling with Hollywood stars.
He learned golf on the local links, where he gained the favor of a rich and childless widow.
He joined the PGA in 1921 and started winning tournaments almost immediately.
He and his brother both learned golf in Edinburgh, thanks to their benefactor.
He was a runner-up in the 1923 U.S. Open, losing in a playoff match to the great Bobby Jones .
