Member of the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, and a former IBF Light Heavyweight and WBA Cruiserweight Champion.

He was in contention for a world middleweight championship shortly after his introduction to professional boxing.

He was a member of the United States boxing team whose other members died in a plane crash in Poland in 1980.

He married actress and photographer Kimberly Ross in 1992.

His second-to-last fight was a loss via 5th round knockout against Evander Holyfield .
