Egyptian politician and diplomat who was the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1992 to 1996.

He received a Ph.D. in International Law from the University of Paris before becoming a Professor of International Law and International Relations at Cairo University in 1979.

During his tenure as the UN Secretary-General he had to deal with the break-up of Yugoslavia and the Rwandan Genocide, but his potential second term was vetoed by the United States.

His grandfather, Boutros Ghali, had been Prime Minister of Egypt from 1908 until he was assassinated in 1910.

Kofi Annan succeeded him as the UN Secretary-General in 1997.
