American author of horror novels, crime fiction, and comic books. His best-known works include The Conqueror Worms and The Rising.

He served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy following his graduation from high school.

He won two Bram Stoker Awards for Jobs in Hell (2001) and The Rising (2003).

He grew up in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

He is a contemporary of fellow American writer Michael Chabon .
