ABOUT BRICE MARDEN

Minimalist artist of large-scale, simplistic works such as "The Dylan Painting" from 1966, "1986," "Fave" from 1969, and "Lethykos" from 1976.

He attended the Yale School of Art and Architecture, where he studied with such notables as Alex Katz , Jon Schueler, Gabor Peterdi, and Esteban Vicente.

He was described by art critic Peter Schjeldahl Marden as "the most profound abstract painter of the past four decades."

His family was residing in Bronxville, New York, when he was born. He was raised in Briarcliff Manor. His first wife Pauline Baez was the sister of renowned folk singer Joan Baez . In 1968, he remarried to Helen Marden. He had two sons and a daughter. His son became a bassist.

He was influenced by the work of artist Jasper Johns .
