Actor who played a dramatic role in the 1953 film, From Here to Eternity. His other films include Trapeze, Sweet Smell of Success, and Atlantic City. He played Felix Happer in the 1983 Local Hero.
He met his future performance partner, Nick Cravat, at age nine. Their friendship led to acrobatic duo acts and local theater productions.
He won a Golden Globe Award for his role in Birdman of Alcatraz. In 1963, he played Prince Don Fabrizio Salina in The Leopard.
He had five children with his second wife, Norma Anderson. He was married to his third wife, Susan Martin, from 1990 until his death.
He became one of the greatest male stars of all time, along with Marlon Brando .
