Born with a cleft palate, early surgery corrected the physical deformity, but even so doctor's predicted he would never speak, much less sing. By his American Idol audition at the age of seventeen, he'd soundly proved them wrong.

He was born to Tina and Barry Richard in Raceland, Louisiana.
