Ranked #21 in The Ring's list of the 100 Greatest Punchers of All Time, he was WBC Bantamweight Champion from May 1976 to June 1979.

He went 33-3 as an amateur and won the Mexican Golden Gloves competition.

He became the first boxer to put together two separate streaks of 20+ knockouts in a row.

His nephew is former WBO Latino Super Flyweight champion Joel Luna Zarate.

He lost his WBC World Bantamweight title to Lupe Pintor on June 3, 1979.
