ABOUT CHARLES CAUSLEY

English poet remembered for works like 1951's "Song of the Dying Gunner A.A.1" and 1953's "Survivor's Leave." He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1958 and received numerous prestigious awards, including the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and a Cholmondeley Award.

He was born in Cornwall and served as a coder in the Royal Navy during World War II.

His poems served as the inspiration for much of the catalog of Scottish folk singer Alex Atterson.

His father died of tuberculosis in 1924.

He was close friends with fellow English poet Ted Hughes .
