American painter, illustrator and sculptor who used the United States Marine Corps as themes and motifs in his works.

He served as a Private First Class in the 5th Marine Division and fought in World War II.

He served three tours in Vietnam as a civilian combat artist.

His parents raised him in Columbus, Georgia.

He and Joseph Wambaugh both served in the Marines.
