Known by the nickname Memphis Charlie, he was a blues harp player, guitarist, and celebrated singer who was inspired by the growing rock 'n' roll movement.
He ran moonshine, dug ditches, and laid concrete to support himself while becoming a musician.
He is of Cherokee ancestry.
He married Henrietta Henri Musselwhite and they had one child together.
He inspired Dan Akroyd's Blues Brothers character.
