She won a modeling contract when she was 16, and studied at the Joffrey Ballet School until she suffered a knee injury.

She played a recurring character named Rita in season three of the FOX comedy series Arrested Development .

She adopted a son named Jackson in March of 2012 and a daughter named August in July of 2015. In 2014 she began dating actor Sean Penn . The couple split in 2015.

She starred in Monster with Christina Ricci .
