ABOUT CHIAKI MUKAI
Medical doctor who was the first Japanese woman in space and the first Japanese citizen to log two space flights.
She served as Chief Resident in Cardiovascular Surgery at Keio University Hospital.
In 1985, she was selected to be an astronaut by Japan's National Space Agency.
She married a fellow doctor.
She and Valentina Tereshkova were the first women from their respective countries to travel to space.
