Award-winning journalist whose reports often revolved around American politics and its impact on society; considered himself a socialist.

He pursued his undergraduate studies at Colgate University, where he graduated with a B.A. in English literature. His graduate studies were done at Harvard's Divinity School.

His 2002 book, "War is a Force That Gives us Meaning," was once a finalist for the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.

He married Eunice Wong shortly after embarking on his professional career as a journalist.

He and philosopher Robert Audi both studied at Colgate University in New York.
