He joined the Aprista Movement in 1930, which resulted in his eventual exile.

He is best known for bringing the plight of the native people of Peru to the public eye.

He was born and raised in the Huamachuco District of Peru.

He once was commissioned to write about Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution.
