American television, film, and stage actress who was nominated for a 1986 Emmy Award for her role as Anna Huxtable on The Cosby Show .

She started working at the American Negro Theatre and also worked at the U.S. Post Office for a while.

She was one of the founding members of the Negro Ensemble Company in New York.

She adopted two sons, William and James Thomas.

She played the role of Bill Cosby 's character's mother in The Cosby Show.
