The first European woman to visit the International Space Station.
She earned a PhD in neuroscience in 1992.
She was an astronaut with the European Space Agency and went on two missions, one of which was to the Mir space station.
She married fellow astronaut Jean-Pierre Haignere.
She was a female astronaut, like Sally Ride .
