Abstract Expressionist, Lyrical Abstraction, and Color Field painter known for his still lifes and landscape paintings.
He attended the prestigious Phillips Academy and went on to graduate summa cum laude from Princeton University.
He fought in Europe during World War II and stayed in France at the war's end to study art in Paris.
His last name was Ginsberg when he was born, but his family decided to change it to Gray in the mid-1930s. He was married to Francine du Plessix Gray from 1957 until his death.
He met Gertrude Stein in Paris at the end of World War II.
