He signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1962, as a free agent; he was just 17 at the time.

He had his best years with the Royals, where he was chosen to the All-Star team five times over eight seasons.

Born Octavio Victor Rojas Rivas, he went into baseball over the objections of his father, who wanted him to become a doctor.
