American poet whose works include North American Book of the Dead and Suburban Monastery Death Poem. Also a publisher of experimental literary work, he established a small printing press in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was born into a Jewish family but discovered Buddhism as a young man.
He was put on trial in the mid-1960s for circulating obscene poetry among minors. Shortly thereafter, at the young age of twenty-six, he committed suicide.
He was the son of Joseph J. and Carolyn Levy and was raised in Cleveland, Ohio.
Beat poet Allen Ginsberg defended Levy during his obscenity trial and participated in a benefit reading to offset Levy's legal fees.
