ABOUT DJ ENRIGHT

A twentieth-century British author, poet, academic, and critic associated with The Movement, he is best known for The Laughing Hyena (1953), The Year of the Monkey (1956), and other volumes of poetry. He was the 1980 recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.

He studied at Downing College, Cambridge and taught in Japan, Thailand, Egypt and Singapore before returning to England.

His 1960 lecture at The University of Singapore resulted in "The Enright Affair," in which he was reprimanded by the Singapore government for his criticism of the country's politics.

He was born into a relatively poor Warwickshire family and attended school on a scholarship.

He was a contemporary of fellow English poet, Brion Gysin .
