He attended Baton Rouge High School in Louisiana.

"The Splendid Splinter" Ted Williams was his manager on the Texas Rangers in 1972.

He was born in McComb, Mississippi.

He was left fielder Carl Yastrzemski 's teammate on the Red Sox in 1967, the year Yaz won the Triple Crown.
