He's from Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended both Louisiana State University and Purdue University , though he also received football scholarship offers from Colorado and Iowa.

He was drafted in 2018 by the New England Patriots in the 7th round. He holds the record for longest quarterback run in Patriots preseason history.

His parents are Gretchen and Joe Etling.

He won Super Bowl LIII along with Tom Brady and the Patriots when they defeated the Los Angeles Rams .
