Washington Post political journalist who was called the Dean of D.C. press corps and won the Pulitzer Prize for Watergate reporting.
He established a reputation as a hard worker, traveling around the country to get his stories, and cultivating more contacts than anyone else.
He spread his influence via Sunday political talk shows, for example making more appearances on Meet the Press than just about any other journalist.
He was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois as the son of his dentist father.
In 1976, he incorrectly called the Wisconsin Democratic primary for the Morris K. Udall and when the winner emerged to be Jimmy Carter he wanted to resign.
