From 1996 until 2009, this Australian sailor held the world record for being the youngest person to have successfully orchestrated a solo (with some minimal assistance) circumnavigation of the globe.
He began his legendary, nine-month voyage at age seventeen, sailing from Western Australia in a sloop called the "Seaflight."
He received the 1999 Medal of the Order of Australia.
He was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia.
He and late 18th and early 19th-century explorer Louis Defreycinet both circled the globe.
