English actor best known for playing Ford Prefect in the 1981 BBC mini-series adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
His first role was in the 1970 TV series A Family at War.
His fan base was known to call themselves "The Dixonites".
He was born in Derby, England but his family later relocated to Normanton.
Barbara Flynn starred alongside him in A Family at War.
