Swimmer who won a gold medal - and set a world record - in the 800M freestyle relay at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
He swam at the University of Florida, where he won two NCAA Championships in the 800M freestyle relay.
He was favored to win multiple gold medals at the 1980 Olympics, but, like the rest of the American Olympians, he did not compete in the games.
He was born in Jesup, Georgia.
He missed the 1980 Olympics after President Jimmy Carter led a boycott to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
