ABOUT DAVID WOJNAROWICZ
Painter, performance artist, photographer, and filmmaker who was prominent in New York's avant-garde art scene.
He was abused as a child and spent his teen years as a hustler on the streets of New York City.
His photographer and artist friend Zoe Leonard created a work called "Strange Fruit" in his honor.
He was the lover of fellow artist Peter Hujar. After Hujar died of AIDS in 1987, Wojnarowicz became involved in AIDS activism.
His controversial short film, "A Fire in My Belly," was part of a Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery exhibition that was funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation.
