His parents encouraged him to become a lawyer, but he had different dreams.
He combined comedy with music in many performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. He starred in more then 30 Broadway musicals.
He married the noted columnist Hedda Hopper on May 8, 1913.
He started performing Casey at Bat when hardly anyone knew the Ernest Thayer baseball poem.
