Mother of R&B singer Aaliyah , who was once nicknamed the "Princess of R&B." During her daughter's singing career, it was estimated that she sold over 20 million album copies.

She raised her daughter Aaliyah primarily in Detroit.

At the time of her daughter's passing, she had received over five Grammy Award nominations.

She lived with her son, Rashad Haughton, and her husband Michael Haughton up until his passing in 2012.

Her daughter acted alongside DMX and Jet Li in the 2000 film Romeo Must Die .
