Won gold medals at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics in the singles competition and became a TV sports commentator following his retirement. He also won 5 gold medals at World Championships throughout his career.
After being told he would never be a good skater, his formal training started.
He won five consecutive World Championship titles from 1948 to 1952. He is credited with bringing more "athleticism" to figure skating after World War II.
He married Slavka Kohout in 1975 and the couple had two children together before divorcing.
He made an appearance in Mr. Broadway with Mickey Rooney .
