She did voiceover work for a Cabbage Patch Kids Christmas TV special in 1984, before getting the role of Jessica Jefferson.

She played Carrie Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon and its three sequels.

Her father was a police officer, and she is of African American and Dominican descent.

She portrayed La Toya Jackson in the TV miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream.
