College Football Hall of Fame player for Northwestern became the last NFL player to not wear a helmet during games.

He joined the Northwestern football team as a walk-on, and earned a starting spot in his sophomore year, ending it with a team MVP award.

Joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 1935, he was an All-Pro selection his rookie year; and after his trade to the Chicago Bears he helped the team to two NFL titles.

His wife of over 50 years was Jane Fauntz Manske, a bronze medalist at the 1932 Summer Olympics.

In one of the most lopsided traded in NFL history, he was sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1938 in exchange for a top draft pick the Bears used on Hall of Famer Sid Luckman .
