ABOUT EDWIN MARKHAM
Poet Laureate of Oregon whose verse works include The Shoes of Happiness and Gates of Paradise. He published two prose works -- Children in Bondage and California the Wonderful -- in 1914.
He attended a Christian college in Santa Rosa, California. He later served as Superintendent of Schools in El Dorado County, California.
His 1899 poetry collection, The Man With the Hoe, was inspired by a French painting.
He was married three times, and he moved to New York City with his third wife, Anna Catherine Murphy.
He developed a friendship with Franklin D. Roosevelt .
