Political wife of George McGovern who served as a U.S. Senator from South Dakota from 1963 to 1981.
She attended Dakota Wesleyan University, where she became interested in political science.
She published a memoir titled Uphill: A Personal Story in 1974.
She married George McGovern on October 31, 1943. They had five children together.
She was featured on the cover of Time magazine along with Pat Nixon during the Presidential election of 1972.
